WHAT IS THE HARLEM MERGE: PART ONE
Harlem Merge: Part One is a visual exploration of Black life, faith, creativity, work, memory, and community through a contemporary fusion of geometric abstraction and narrative storytelling.
Inspired by the visual rhythms associated with Aaron Douglas and the human-centered storytelling associated with Jacob Lawrence, the series brings together radiating forms, layered silhouettes, angular architecture, expressive figures, and richly textured urban scenes. The result is a visual language that feels rooted in history while speaking directly to the present.
The works in Part One move through moments of reflection, family, labor, spiritual life, cultural identity, community struggle, education, and hope. Rather than treating the past as something distant, Harlem Merge presents history, legacy, and contemporary Black experience as connected parts of the same continuing story.
At its heart, this gallery is about movement: where we have been, what we carry with us, what we are building now, and what we hope to leave for those who come after us.
